Finally --- we are embarking on a research project with the Vet School at the Univ of QLD to investigate why QLD frogs are getting cancer. So far, six different cancers have been identified in our frogs and we need to know why this is happening. This two year project is an important step forward in documenting this disaster for a global audience. BUT there are two pre-requisites for us to participate: the first is that we cannot setup properly in our current location. We MUST find a suitable house to rent urgently. Remember homeowners - we are not commercial so there are no signs out front and few visitors. The second is that a LOT of funding will need to be secured to cover the broad range of investigative techniques. While we are applying for grants, it takes six months to a year before the money is available and that is only if you beat out all the hundreds of other applicants. We all have so many things to deal with when these outrageous floods come along, it can be difficult to remember that wildlife can be drastically affected by floods too. After the 'rain bomb' associated with cyclone Jasper last year, a lot of frogs died. The ones we had come in had blood poisoning which is understandable considering what was in all those flood waters. (Remember flood water is a hazard to YOUR health too.) If you see any frogs out in the open or skinny in the next few months, please use gloves or a plastic bag over your hands to pick it up and place in a container with air holes. Bring indoors and ring us on (07) 4006-3784. Australian frogs in recent years have been dying out and we can't let this current flood be yet 'another nail in their coffin'. In May 2023, we were forced to relocate AGAIN and the only place available to us (because of the rental crisis) was a house in Innisfail. We are grateful to have a roof over our heads - but this is not the right roof. Our work has been compromised by being here and the situation has gotten worse. Not only is this house affecting the health of our live-in volunteer, it is affecting the frogs in care. Plus we are about to embark on a study to find the causes of cancer in QLD frogs and we cannot setup properly for that project in this location. We have been looking for a suitable place for WELL OVER A YEAR now and can't find anything at a fair price because the rental crisis is even worse and the greed is palpable. Do you own a house or an acreage with a caretaker's house on it and want a GOOD tenant for it? OR even better, are you in a position to buy a cheap property that suits us so we can be your permanent tenant? Owners take note that we are excellent tenants and we are not commercial so there are no signs out front. There are some environmental factors because we are caring for an extremely sensitive animal. To start, we need to be at least a km from the nearst mobile tower; mains power needed; and we need to install communications (landline, internet). The property should be chemical-free. There are so many expenses when running an animal rescue/rehab organisation and many of those are not 'sexy' but absolutely essential if we are to house dozens of animals in care and run an office to communicate with people.
